A Pair of Panels.

Feb 28, 2007 in What Were They Thinking, Wonder Woman

Silver Age Irony.

The Silver Age reintroduction of the Holiday Girls has that wonderful Silver Age “Irony”.

Laughed? I thought I’d die.

Bonus Panel:

Please Don’t Throw Me in the Briar Patch!

Wonder Woman loves getting captured

“I find the boy and get to get bound? Score!”

I accidently used this image with the wrong commentary a few weeks ago. Finally correcting.

Also, I’ve been tracking what search terms bring people here for two days and am already highly disturbed.

Confession.

Feb 27, 2007 in Superman, What Were They Thinking

I have to make a confession.

When I saw this cover, I cheered.

Alas, it’s a big tease. His “crime” is making mankind too dependant on him.

That’s much worse than the many he has murdered and his regular mental manipulation of his alleged “pal” and “girlfriend”.

Creepy!

Feb 26, 2007 in Bondage, Creepy Relationships, What Were They Thinking, Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman has some fairly creepy stories, especially when they try to focus on the Steve/Diana dynamic.

This one, from issue 167, may actually be the creepiest.

I give you “The Strange Power of the Magic Lasso”

That’s the “teaser” page, which gets you the gist. Steve gets his hands on the lasso and makes Diana his slave. So obsessed is he with her that he won’t even free her when her life is potentially on the line.

That’s good husband material!

She’s clearly into it too. Why do I say that?

Instead of taking the chance to break free, she starts kissing him.

OH YOU BRAVE, BRAVE OBJECTIFIER OF ME!

So eventually, Steve has to drop the lasso.

Keep in mind that at this point he has basically taken away her free will, put her life in danger repeatedly, and treated her as an object.

Clearly, the logical reaction is to beat him so hard his ancestors feel it, right?

A particularly nice touch is how Steve is utterly unrepentant.

What, exactly, is the message of this story? Seriously.

The only difference between Steve and Doctor Psycho is Psycho was ugly, so he went to jail. Steve was a pretty-boy, so it’s okay when he kidnaps and enslaves a woman.

Score!

Feb 25, 2007 in New York Comic Convention 2007

I won a stunning JRJR Thor poster at the NY ComicCon by playing Marvel’s “Prize or No Prize”.I actually made it on stage but blew it by not knowing what S.W.O.R.D. stood for. I got the poster on the last question asked “Of the following 4 heroes, who was not one of ‘The Warriors Three’.” I had my hand up before they finished listing the names.

The answer was Heimdale btw.

Here’s a pic:

Wonder Bitchyness

Feb 22, 2007 in What Were They Thinking, Wonder Girl, Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl are very bitchy to Wonder Tot in this Impossible Day story.

Wonder Tot FINALLY uses an “I” instead of a “me” and her elder-selves corrects her grammar… except they tell her to use “I”, which she is already using.

Then Wonder Girl chimes in to tell her younger self she’s delusional.

All the while, Hypolita watches this unique form of self-abuse, which is apparently what she considers “warm-hearted”.

Three Groaners.

Feb 21, 2007 in Puns, What Were They Thinking

I really can’t stand puns like this.

“Let’s name an alien “xenophobe”! That’d be funny!”

Puns really are the lowest form of humor.

I say it again, puns are the lowest form of humor. Ever. Spider Robinson is the only person who has ever pulled off a pun without me wanting to hit him.

Oh not THAT old saw.

I love the names though. April and May. It’s like their parents wanted them to be Playboy bunnies when they grew up.

If they had a sister named June it would be perfect.

For No Real Reason!

Feb 20, 2007 in What Were They Thinking, Wonder Woman

As a sort of follow-up to the last post, I give you, the actual origin of the Robot Plane!

So it’s actually alive, and not a robot at all. In this case, I want to know what they were thinking in not playing this up. That is such a mind-boggling cool concept! (Actual snark tomorrow. Promise).

Sorry for the late post! WordPressed saved this as a draft instead of posting it!

Impossible Day Stories!

Feb 19, 2007 in What Were They Thinking, Wonder Woman

I love Impossible Day Stories. They hurt my brain though.

The basic premise of an IDS is this: Diana would team up with her past selves (Wonder Girl and Wonder Tot) and have an adventure. At first they had framing stories explaining that the actual story was impossible and how it was “pulled off”. Eventually they just ran with it and occasionally you’d have the three in one story. This led to other writers thinking Wonder Girl and Wonder Woman existed concurrently and gave us Donna Troy. So if you think her continuity was messed up POST-Crisis, you’re a tad late to the party.

An entire page from issue 128:

Okay, first off… “sound pictures”? They’re called MOVIES, Polly. Sheesh. Early Silver-Age – why use one word when two will do? Secondly… is there some reason Diana doesn’t remember leaving these messages for herself? Sure, she might not remember them day to day, but when she hears them she should react “Oh. Right. The recording.” Instead she’s all shocked. Oh, and if she knows the story when she’s Wonder Tot, why is she asking again as Wonder Girl? Further, why are they watching her tell the story in the Time Viewer instead of just watching the story? I mean, Hypolita’s obviously watched it!

Seriously. My brain hurts now

Wheee.

Feb 18, 2007 in What Were They Thinking

I imported “What Were They Thinking” from Livejournal to the new site. The catch is that it doesn’t import the comments, which is a bummer.

Oh, and I’m a moron and forgot to turn the cross-poster off first, so now everything is double posted at Livejournal. I’ll fix that up later.
