What Sexual Harris Meant.

Jun 29, 2007 in Creepy Relationships, Sexism, What Were They Thinking, Wonder Woman

Did you know that Diana Prince was the victim of sexual harassment?

S’true.

It was actually a brilliant idea. Diana Prince is attractive, but “weak” due to the alter ego thing. Perfect bait for a predatory male. Not much came of it. Darnell keeps doing it and Diana keeps putting up with his nonsense (unless I missed an issue where she reports him).Still, a brilliant twist on a few Golden Age stories which had General Darnell also smitten with Wonder Woman.

I admit, this is less a WWTT than a “I wish this had panned out in some way.”

Kiiiiinky!

I’m sad to say that I could not get my hands on most of the “White Jumpsuit” era Wonder Woman issues. I’m really sad. Always wanted to read those. Plus, from what I’ve seen, they’d have been great grist for the site.

However, from early on in that period comes this gem.

No, the girl’s name is not Mary.

Oh I’m in love with a big blue frog…

“Just Like a Woman”

Jun 27, 2007 in Sexism, What Were They Thinking, X-Men

The object is worried because all the Alpha males are goneÂ…

Now if Roy Thomas had written this, he’d say, “just like a female.”

It’s important to note those stylistic differences.

Last “Jean the Object”. Promise.

The new version of WordPress has “broken” both my Treo clients. Bah.

“Good Jean. Good Girl!”

“As the Object, I crave attention from the Alpha Male.”

I wonder what would happen if he scratched her behind the ears…

Where To Start?

Jun 25, 2007 in Bad Science, Sexism, What Were They Thinking, X-Men

“Thank you for cooking Jean. It’s a good thing you are here, for none of us men can cook, as we do not possess ovaries.”

“That’s okay professor. I enjoy being nothing more than an object for Warren and Scott to pine after and you to secretly and lecherously lust after as well. I understand that my duties as an object include preparing your meals. Shall I wash your feet now, master?”

Okay, so I’m reading into it just a bit.

My main issue is what Iceman’s doing. Pie ala Mode. While “ala mode” literally means in the stlye, colloquially it means “with a scoop of Ice Cream”.

Note the word “cream”.

He’s actually about to eat a bunch of ice shavings. Unless his mutant ability includes generating cream, sugar, and auto-churning it.

“As the object, it is my duty to enforce the Alpha Male’s laws.”

MoCCA 2007 Art fest.

Jun 24, 2007 in Family, MoCCA, Religion

I went to the MoCCA Artfest today. Took my six-year old and had a great time. Met a lot of comic creators I’ve admired for some time and got to bond with my daughter. She almost fainted over a Dean Tripp Supergirl print, which just goes to show she has taste. She was also ticled pink (if a bit shy) when she met Sarah Dyer and Evan Dorkin, as she’s “read” her “Supergirl Adventures” comic until it fell apart. I got her a new one, which both creators signed, with a notation “to Super-(daughter’s name)”. Very sweet. They have some very cute kids, too. (The amount of pros with kids in tow was suprising and cool)

They actually had an entire table of one Jewish creator after another. One of which was Miriam Libiki, who I’ve always wanted to check out. it turns out that not only is she the sister of a girl I once knew (the girl who introduced me to the wonder of Terry Pratchett, in fact), but said sister married someone I went to school with. Small world. Good comic, too.

Got a nice deal on every issue of Action Philosophers,  which I’ve wanted for a while. Fred Van Lente is a cool guy. We were actually in the same anthology once upon a time. Amazingly good comic. If you have not read it, you’re missing out.

I got to meet Stephanie Freese and Matt Wood, who were both members of a studio I used to run. They are awesome.

I have a bunch of cards for sites to check out and exchanged links with a ton of people (not to self, next year bring cards. Also, rebuild portfolio section of site ASAP). Very good time.

The highlight though, would have to be the people who assumed my friend jeff and I were a same-sex couple. Really. happened at elast twice at the con and then later on the Lower East Side, where a man who noticed my daughter wlaking hand-in-hand with both of us (Jeff’s her buddy), interrupted our conversation to say he was glad we didn’t live there and made a comment about “our sort”. What a great fellow!

Steve “Nancy” Trevor.

Please note that this is from a story of the Earth-2 Wonder Woman, fairly early in her career.

“See that, fellows? Trevor needs a woman to fight his battles! Come, let us mock him!”

Into It.

Someone seems to like it painful (and a little messy).

Actually he’s not doing as well as Loki thinks. He just forgot the Safety Word again.

Basic science: You don’t light fires, let alone smoke, in an artificial, sealed environment like a space station.

You may have seen this one.

This is a one-time throw-away thought balloon, but it is still pretty bad

Not, mind you, as bad as using it as the cornerstone of the entire “Onslaught” concept around it decades later.
