Subtext

Jul 31, 2008 in Batman, Robin, Sexuality, What Were They Thinking

The following subtext is brought to you by Jason Todd’s envy of Batman spending time with Catwoman instead of him:

Robin’s jealousy would come out as not so odd, if it weren’t for Batman’s behavior.

Batman can’t just talk to Jason, oh no. Instead he steals bits of the boy’s clothing to lure him down to their special place.

Wrong. Just wrong.

“My Eyes! They BURN!”

Jul 30, 2008 in Black Canary, What Were They Thinking

To any fans who have never been exposed to the following horror, I’m sorry to do this to you.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – the 80s were a Dark Time for Fashion.

The only good thing to ever come out of that costume was a great gag in Birds of Prey.

Oh My.

Jul 29, 2008 in Batman, Robin, Sexuality, What Were They Thinking

Commissioner Gordon implies something

This may be the first example I’ve found of a Batman character suggesting there’s something untoward about the dynamic.

Jul 28, 2008 in Batman, Sexuality, What Were They Thinking

Batman/Robin slash is done to death.

Check this out:

“I’m dirty Alfred! Dirty! Punish me and tell me what a bad little boy I’ve been!”

Slightly Overwhelmed Today

Jul 27, 2008 in Family

Massive project at work, over 200 scans to caption for the blog, have to set up the August posts (With as little Batman as possible), and closing on my house Friday.

Excuse me if I scream for a moment.

Odd Lingual Moment

Jul 25, 2008 in Batman, What Were They Thinking

Batman is tracking Catman and a hypnotized Catwoman. Their trail takes him to Egypt, where he has a conversation that ends on an odd note.

Why would an Egyptian official say goodbye to an American National in Hebrew?

Did the writer just not know how to say “goodbye” in the local lingo, so he figured “hey, it’s not that far, geographically speaking?”

Robin Violates Batgirl

Jul 24, 2008 in Bad Science, Batgirl, Robin, What Were They Thinking

My topic is slightly misleading. Robin does not physically violate Batgirl. That, you see, would be wrong.

Violating her mind however, is okay. Heck, it’s JLA policy.

(Really. An old Brave and the Bold revealed it was JLA policy to have one’s mind wiped if one learned a fellow Leaguer’s ID.

Trust issues, much?)

What was Robin’s secret, you wonder?

Best comment wins.

Nice Subtle Dig

Jul 23, 2008 in Batman, Odd Bad Guys, What Were They Thinking

In issue 489, a bunch of butlers and other hired help are stealing from their employers. One such crook is a dead ringer for Alfred. He decides to go undercover, as the honour of Gentleman’s Gentlemen everywhere is at risk.

Don’t worry. It wasn’t really Jarvis. It was a Skrull.

Bitter Babs

Jul 22, 2008 in Batgirl, Politics, What Were They Thinking

Barbara Gordon did not, sadly, get reelected to the US House of Representatives. She did not take this well.

“I’m going to make sure they need Batgirl,” sure sounds like a threat to me.

(I love how there’s no transition period in DCU politics. Someone loses an election and boom, out of office)

Bad Artist and Colorist! BAD!

Jul 21, 2008 in Batgirl, Racism, What Were They Thinking

In 1978, there is no real excuse for this sort of depiction.

Throughout this Batgirl backup stories, Asians are colored in this almost gold color, have almost pointy ears, and the antagonists have fangs.

WTF?
