No Post Today

Aug 29, 2008 in What Were They Thinking

Sorry y’all. Been too exhausted from moving and setting up house to get any writing/posting done. I may have something later today, but no promises. I may not be able to get to anything until Tuesday at this rate.

In the meantime, enjoy the archives.

Techno-babble

Aug 28, 2008 in Bad Science, Green Lantern, What Were They Thinking

Star Trek is often credited with inventing the idea of technobabble – say something that sounds scientific, even if it’s meaningless.

“The mere application of symbolic logic to the 5th degree” sounds a lot better than “Alan Scott is a tall blond male who hangs out with Doiby. Green Lantern a tall blond male who hangs out with Doiby.”

Seriously, at least Clark Kent has some friends outside of work…

Here’s a Treat

Just for the regulars:

Magnetism glows?

I Knew it Was Too Good To Be True.

As I get set to close the book on Alan Scott, I thought “Hey, what do you know – a Golden Age DC run with no spanking!”

Me and my big mind…

The smile on Alan Scott’s face is creeping me out.

Heroes Don’t Kill!

Aug 25, 2008 in Green Lantern, What Were They Thinking

We all know that right and proper heroes do not kill their enemies. Not on purpose, anyway.

And no, the cop doesn’t promptly arrest him. After all, he’s a hero.

Not an Actual WWTT Moment.

This is brilliant.

You couldn’t get away with that punch line these days, mind you. Someone would yell “Won’t somebody think of the children!”

Happy moving day to me.

Don’t Misdial.

Aug 22, 2008 in Ads, Superman, What Were They Thinking

Anyone remember all those 900 numbers for kids they had in the mid 80s? With your parent’s permission (suuure), you could role play with your favorite hero. It always seemed odd to me. For one thing, imagine the kid saying “mom, can I call a 900 number?”

For another, what if they misdial?

They call for Superman:

And next thing they know they’re on a completely different kind of action-line.

Tough Talk

Don’t mess with these Gotham toughs. You’ll be sorry.

At No Point Do His Lips Move.

Aug 20, 2008 in Batman, What Were They Thinking

The Ventriloquist and Scarface may be Alan Grant’s greatest contribution to the Batman mythos. It has everything. Is he a haunted puppet, made from gallows wood? Is he the manifestation of a man’s severely repressed Id? Is the Ventriloquist actually having us all on?

One of the cute touches was having Scarface unable to say the letter “b”, which I suppose is really hard to pull off without moving you lips. Instead he says “g”. The thing is, there’s sometimes this odd conceit in comics that someone must talk the way they write:

Almost as annoying as the time someone had Rogue write “Ah” instead of “I”.

This Art Hurts

Aug 19, 2008 in Batman, What Were They Thinking

This Todd McFarlane page hurts my wee little eyes.

Proportion? Wazzat?

No way can that cop hold that rifle-thingie one-handed.
