A Jewy Pet Peeve.
Are any of you familiar with the legend of the Golem? A creature made of earth, brought to life by Jewish mysticism. Golems are mindless automatons, with a tendency to turn on their masters. In many versions, it has the Hebrew word for “truth” written on it’s forhead.
Golems show up a few times in comic books. One time was in the 90s, which gives us the below Detective Comics panel.
1) Gee, any particular reasons a Jewish mystic would transliterate? Other than “so the kids at home know what’s there,” mind.
2) This one’s a bit Jewyer – why would an Ashkenzi (Eastern European Jew) use that transliteration? It should be “Emes”, not “emeth”. The sound “th” doesn’t even exist in Hebrew. It only shows up in some Christian translations of the Torah.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled secular blog.
Spent yesterday priming the kitchen walls. So much fun
