Denny O’Neill’s JLof A Run

Denny O Neill did some really interesting issues of JLA. Like his GA-GL run, he pitted the League against real world problems like pollution, etc. Sometimes with a science fiction twist and almost always in a unsubtle, heavy handed manner. Sadly, not all the issues I read were scannable, but I did manage to find one gem.

Still, the cover the JLoA #80 basically sums up every issue in the run:

Superman fails, the rest of the League cries, and something saves the day and a moral is hammered home.

I can’t figure out what’s worse; the fact that they don’t even tell us what this “disaster” is (because clearly the cover was designed before the story was written), Superman in the most unnatural position imaginable despite no obvious sign of anything that could hit him hard enough to cause it, or the biggest deus ex machina character in comics (note: DrNovakaine does not read many comics and therefore cannot confirm the accuracy of that designation) hanging his head like a little bitch at the prospect of a disaster he could probably clear up with a wave of his hand.

I don’t know who that fuzzy guy is, but if he thinks it’s the end of the world, you may be able to cheaply acquire his technology that projects giant comic book panels into midair. Your site’s traffic will explode! (Hopefully before Earth does.)

I just love the grip Atom has on Flash’s leg.

I was thinking how amazingly strong he was holding up a panel like that will not even be firmly grounded (he’s standing on the toes of his left foot) but your remark makes more sense funny enough.

Notice how GL is not really sad, but frowning outraged and seriosly considering legal action against Superman for copyright infringement, ONLY him can be knocked out cold like that for no apparent reason, and then be left floating unconcious in an ackward position.

Notice how Green Arrow is glaring at Green Lantern.  He knows GL can fix this but won’t.

Why is Green Arrow smirking? Does he know something we don’t know? And look how Batman is wishing he was somewhere else right now.

Yeah I loved that too. But why is the guy always in shrink mode? Does he think it’s cute or what? Your special power is shrinking, we get it by now!

The curl of his mustache looks like a smirk, but I interpreted it as glaring…at Green Lantern…

I suspect Ray Palmer has a foot fetish.

Sitting around and crying is the best way to solve problems
