Every Comic Is Someone’s First
There’s an old saw in the comic book industry: “Every comic is someone’s first”. Personally, I feel comic books kind of lost track of this in the 90s. Now, we have recap pages in Marvel, and a bit more flow at DC.
Still, the flip-side is this image of all Silver and Golden Age comics as these “done in one” exemplars. While this was true of some books (note how Metal Men comics establish the dynamic over again and again every issue), Green Lantern actually some long term continuity. Usually it was dealt with in story, but then we have this great “ur-recap” page:
You know, you really could have just boiled that down to “Carol Ferris has Space Cooties! Don’t let her kiss you, Hal!”
Interestingly, the actual reason Carol becomes Star Sapphire again has nothing to do with Hal.
This does not sit well with Hal.
“But… what could be more important than me?”
More on this tomorrow.
