“Facts” About Africa.

I love when Golden Age comics have little pages of “facts” Especially when they’re wrong.

So what caught my attention here? That’d be the bottom left. Aside from the assertion that there’s one white race (really?) there’s the basic fact that Abyssinia (which has two “s”es) is just another name for Ethiopia.

Makes me wonder what else on the page is inaccurate.

Zanzibar: Uh….they forgot to mention it's part of Tanzania….They're making Zanzibar out to be Soddam and Gemorra but it's not at all!

Madagascar: The info provided is actually accurate….

Ethiopia: Accurate as I've read this on some websites in the past

Abysinnia: *lmao* Abyinia and Ethiopia are the same fraking thing!!!

I can't seem to find much on the Yafouba tribe…other than the fact that there's books on them and refer to em as forest people.

Witch Doctor is considered to be a derogitory term in Africa. The so called witch doctors are known as Sangoma and are only in Southern Africa, not ALL of Africa. And they don't practice witch craft. They're healers, medicine men (or women).

The Yafouba information is based on “Jungle Ways” by William B. Seabrook, published in 1931. I'm guessing they tried to be accurate but the sources they used weren't. In their defence, the “race idea” was still considered valid science at the time.

And apparently all females are member of the white race.

Zanzibar wasn't part of Tanzania when this was written; Tanzania didn't even exist at this point. Zanzibar and Tanganyika didn't merge until 1964, or about 15 years after the end of the Golden Age.

You've got to love the first panel: An incredible combiantion of exotic dancers, crooks (openly showing their weapons and all), drunkards, musicians, adobe buildings…

So, the Yafouba are all serial killers. And Zanzibar's an island? *Sigh*, the American public school system fails me once again.

What do you think the Yafouba's are trying to do? Unfortunately their knowledge of the female anatomy wasn't that great to begin with.

I think they left a text box off of the final panel…you know, the one that reads, “Being run through by swords is the number one leading cause of death for young female jugglers' assistants in the Ivory Coast.”
