    I do agree that it’s not PC by our standards to randomly mention gender but I don’t think that it’s condescending.

    They probably thought the readers were total morons that they couldn’t tell a lady by her curves. maybe they thought the short hair would throw the so-called morons off, much like how a guy sporting long hair could cause people to mistaken him for a chick. So the artists and the writers just HAD to drive the point that she was a woman home.
