In The Future, There is No Human Resources Department.

In the 58th century, there arose a trouble so great that the people of Earth felt the need to use time travel to recruit the famous Hal Jordan to be their “Solar Director”. Basically, every time there was a crisis, they’d pull Hal from the past, then brain-wash him and have him be Pol Manning, intrepid explorer, hero, and puppet dictator.

It was a brilliant plan, really.

So what’s the flaw, you ask?

That’s right Iona, just close your eyes and think of Earth.

Footnote: In the 80′s, the Green Lantern Salakk was yanked to be Pol Manning instead of Hal Jordan. As Salakk was quite alien, they decided to brainwash Iona so she’d continue playing her role.

The future. Such a bright place to be!

“I own a vein”? Is that some sort of 58th Century sexual innuendo? Or was Gardner Fox just reading too much Ian Fleming at the time?

  • Maniac Doc

Good to see that the future is as socially progressive and bias-free as medieval Europe.

Then again, maybe this is a unique case. Goodness knows any watchdog organization that would want Hal Jordan to be their savior can’t be all that bright to begin with.

  • Megalon

So, The Future is exactly like 1962 only with more crotchless old men in leotards and poofy shirts.

Go ahead and just drop the bomb already. I don’t even care anymore.

  • Dierna

Stan Lee has such a big head in the 58th century….

  • onion3000

The last panel suggests that, by the 58th century, picking your nose is socially acceptable.

  • Naryldor

Unsurprisingly, 58th century’s alien races are all funny coloured skin humanoids with even funnier hairdos. Because everybody knows, if there’s intelligent life out there, it must definitively look like us, just funnier and dumber.

And is it just me or does “Stan Lee” have breasts in the last panel?

  • sezaar

Look at that Alien’s ass! No wonder they want Jordan! And those aren’t breasts, it’s a Mr Fantastic breast-implant. Very popular in the future.

  • madwoman

Nice to know sexism is still alive and well in the 58th century. Stan Lee finally realizes his greatest desire: pimpin’!

Yeah, but Iona DIDN’T have to be brainwashed into falling for Hal. One look at him, and she played along QUITE willingly. The floozy. :-)

I appreciate the bald, purple alien’s attempt to get my attention, but his ass is just not as fantastic as Hal’s.

LOL…that’s one of the best ones you’ve put up.

“That’s right Iona, just close your eyes and think of Earth.”

    Classic. Haha…

I’m loving these Green Lantern escapades.

  • Michael

So how does Hal get his memory back? And is he still wearing his gay future clothes when he returns to 1962? And does Iona have to pretend to be more interested in some other guy “Pol” never sees to keep up the versimilitude?

  • Naryldor

I know it’s hard to blame them since this comic was written back in the 60s, but I just couldn’t help myself to not pointing out how 58th century Miss Vane is looking for Hal’s data in a filing cabinet!! No computer files 3700 years into the future? :P

So the 58th century will be filled with funny-coloured tights-wearing misogynist aliens and no computers? Hmmmm, thankfully, with any luck, I’ll be dead by then…

  • typolad

@Michael: Hal’s memory does come back, and try getting the archive editions for the other questions. Awesome stories.

By the way, anyone looking for a full-sized crossover SUV should definitely consider a Buick Enclave.
