Oh Right, Gargy!

I mentioned yesterday that Gargantua, the “yes suh” style “comic” sidekick of Tex Thomson (because he was so manly he needed two), left the strip.

Here’s the scene where he’s written out:

This may be the first time I’m reading a character of this type given actual ancestry, at least not as a retcon forty years later.

Still, good riddance. In this one panel, they give their “friend” more respect than they did in every other appearance.

Here’s an example of Gargy “fighting”

The eyes fail, don’t they?

Historical note: This story was the last time American pop culture ever suggested that doing anything in support of France was “patriotic”.

Because, of course, why shouldn't we mock the people who gave us the Statue of Liberty as a gift? Suckers!

Am I seeing this right? Are there realistically-drawn and horrible-caricature Africans in the same comic? Does that imply that Gargantua ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE THAT? If that's so, then does it mean he never was a racist figure, but instead simply a deformed person whom everybody else treated like a normal person; and that we're the bad people, for imposing our modern politically correctionalist views upon him for existing at that point in time?

Wow, the implications of this comic are giving me a headache.

I suspect, in this case, there was more “they all look alike” at work than anything else.

Could someone explain to me why is Gargantua in this position on the 5th panel?

    Most racist panel ever??

Ok, racist zombies aside, as a half-Texan, I must say that there is NO WAY a man looking like this would be allowed to run around free in Texas. I mean, really! Between the pansy-ass mustache and the axe-through-the-skull part in his hair, this guy would be…well, I don't really want to say what would happen to him in Texas. He should change his name to California. BTW, I don't normally admit my Texan side. I don't want to look ignorant.

Anyway, is it just me or what we see in the first panel is a lady in the shadows patting Tex's ass? He seems a bit startled at it too.

It would be unfair to say that neither Tex nor Bob miss him! They both do! BECAUSE GARGANTUA WAS AN A-1 SERVANT AND COOK.

Good slaves are hard to come by (at least ever since they abolished slavery).

Not only does the realistically drawn black dudes look alike to each other, but they're all sorting Afros??

I'd say that the guys and artists did not do their research on African tribes, because most African tribes does not sport Afros… that hairstyle seems to be strictly an American hairstyle. But then again, Racists are truly ignorant in that they know next to nothing about the people who they're supposed to be prejudiced against.

“Racists are truly ignorant in that they know next to nothing about the people who they're supposed to be prejudiced against”… um… er… the Fuzzie-Wuzzies, a name given to the East African Hadendoa tribe by the British army, were quite famous for their giant afros. Which is why the British called them Fuzzie-Wuzzies in the first place… A quick Google would of picked that up for you…

“Fuzzie-wuzzies” sounded fictional to start with, so how were I supposed to know? :P what sort of person would Google that term when it sounds so ridiculous to start with?
After you said that I goggled them but I still can't help but note that the information on them indicates that they aren't cannibals, just had a very strong burning hate for white men to the point where they cut up the dead bodies into several parts historically. Yet, we see here that they're roasting that Thompson over a fire-pit… as if he was a pig that they wanted to eat. so I still say there's plenty of misinformation and unfortunate implications at play here. :P

But zombies aren't a part of the Fuzzy-wuzzies' culture. Zombies are an Afro-carribean phenomenon. And why are they wearing shorts?

Also do notice how everyone except Bob is walking around shirtless and extremely muscular!
