The Red Torpedo

Another Classic Golden Age hero, the Red Torpedo is actually a frustrated inventor. Check it out:

Neat, right? Except wait-a-minute…

“Too fantastic”? It’s a submarine. What’s so fantastic?

I mean yeah, eventually we learn it can fly and shoot lasers and even go on land, but the basic concept is kind of solid.

Also? I’d love to see a story where Captain Wells walks around telling everyone the Red Torpedo must be Lockhart. Way to keep your ID secret Jim. You could have at least changed the color…

Who is this “Red Torpedo”-guy? It can't be Jim Lockhart who resigned to built exactly the same thing, that would be too obvious!

I'm guessing that the captain might have an short memory–the only reason why he wouldn't be walking around telling everyone that I can think of. maybe he got knocked on the head one time too many in a war. :p lol

Sure, every Navy in the World would allow one of its member just to resign and walk away with the blueprints of a “too fantastic” vessel under the armpit, no problem!

Also, a man navigated torpedo? Yeah right! “Hey Jimmy, we need a test subj… er… pilot here! Why don't ya step inside this nice red torpedo…? Riiiight, now we want you to navigate it into that supe oil tanker's hull right there, you think you could…? That's my boy!”

“Because you won't let me build a machine that looks like a cross between a child's toy and a 'women's toy,' I'm going to quit the job that provides my only source of income just so I can build it and use it to do the same basic job for free.” Solid reasoning, Jim.

Lesse what Wikipedia says about Red Torpedo (who apperantly never teamed up with Red Tornado….darnit)

“Jim Lockhart was a navy captain until he retired in 1940. Unable to settle down, he began building a one-man submarine known as “The Red Torpedo.” Using the devices onboard, he became the peacekeeper of the seas, the Robin Hood of the deep. His run as a hero for Quality comics consisted of Crack Comics 1-20. His most common enemy was the Black Shark, a pirate of sorts.

Hours before the attack on Pearl Harbor, Red Torpedo was recruited by Uncle Sam to join the Freedom Fighters in defending the base. He fell with the other heroes and was left for dead. Later, it was revealed that he was not dead, but he did retire after this.

Red Torpedo was seen aiding the Starman of 1951 in building his spaceship, The Flying Star. He was most recently seen as one of the administrators of Windward Home in Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis, along with Elsa Magnusson, widow of Mark Merlin.”

So he died at Pearl Harbor, got better, decided to frak it and retire and help people make other “torpedoes”….

Whatever branch of the Navy this was, they were still wearing WW1 dress blues in 1940. Of course they wouldn't take a one-man submarine seriously.
