Will Magnus: Woman Hater.

Thursday, August 31st, 2006 @ 9:51 am | Metal Men, Sexism, What Were They Thinking

The below panel helped me see a certain robotocist in a new light.

Okay, aside from the whole Pygmalion deal going on here, you have to love Will Magnus’ idea of a real woman – pleading and subservient.

In case you think I’m reaching:

And to think, I used to wonder why Doc Magnus was still single.

If only brain wave recording technology existed in the 1800's. Then Doc Magnus could have solved all these problems by encoding Platinum with the brain waves of Abraham Lincoln's Mom.

Hey, but wait, maybe Sue Richards is available.

There's more levels to Will's cruelty. He makes thinking, sentient machines and one of his first thoughts is to send them away.

"Hi, people! This is your new home!"
    "Home!"
    "Now get the f out!"

Magnus has always been exactly this kind of jerk. He's like Reed Richards but without the entitlement.

Come on, Doc. You let Tin on the team. Surely a woman (with all her..."womanly things") wouldn't be any worse than that.

And the soldier-guy agrees with you - look at his expression in that second panel!

What a smug little tool. Look at his face in that second panel!

And is it just me, or could Platinum extricate Doc Magnus' spinal column with relatively little effort, were she so inclined?

As an aside, I think we have another possible explanation why none of the incredible inventions comic book scientists create ever see widespread use in their respective worlds: He's created an incredible miniaturized power source that's animating a cybernetic organism with an astonishing level of AI (stereotypical personality aside) and phenomenal shapeshifting powers--and he proposes to just ship this brand-new collection of breakthroughs off to a museum?

    Yeah.

They all could. The Metal Men are like Reed Richards but with impaling abilities.

And it's ironic because later on Platinum would hate how Doc never looks at her as a real woman, just as a machine. The path of true love never did run smooth.
