Generally, Zatara’s pretty heroic. He rescues damsels in distress, finds lost fortunes, destroys would-be world-beaters, and all the usual stuff. Sure, he lets The Tigress go a bunch of times, just because she’s hawt, but that’s good enough for Batman, right?
Then there’s this story:
Let’s be clear here – this isn’t s bad guy. This is someone who made a fortune and decided to “invest” it in an odd way. In no way is it ever indicated that he’s a bad guy. Yet Zatara readily agrees to help out. Okay, you think, maybe he’s dead and they’re finding the lost treasure. Yeah, that’d work.
Well, on with the story:
Hey look, it’s the Tigress. I think this comes after the fifth of sixth time that Zatara lets her off the hook. Zatara is apparently a slow learner.

A very, very slow learner.
Yes Zatara, you must save the known murderer and her associate from the unknown fellow protecting his home!
Question: If they already new the walls were closing in, why in the world did they wait for Zatara to get back before going into the next room?
And here we have the clincher – that their “attacker” is the guy owning the treasure. Zatara is basically robbing the guy. Sure, he turns out to be a homicidal nut, but that doesn’t alleviate the fact that Zatara set out to rob some guy.
“Lured men”? So what, by being rich, the guy was asking for it?
Nice to see Zatara got his cut though.
