Creepy!

Wonder Woman has some fairly creepy stories, especially when they try to focus on the Steve/Diana dynamic.

This one, from issue 167, may actually be the creepiest.

I give you “The Strange Power of the Magic Lasso”

That’s the “teaser” page, which gets you the gist. Steve gets his hands on the lasso and makes Diana his slave. So obsessed is he with her that he won’t even free her when her life is potentially on the line.

That’s good husband material!

She’s clearly into it too. Why do I say that?

Instead of taking the chance to break free, she starts kissing him.

OH YOU BRAVE, BRAVE OBJECTIFIER OF ME!

So eventually, Steve has to drop the lasso.

Keep in mind that at this point he has basically taken away her free will, put her life in danger repeatedly, and treated her as an object.

Clearly, the logical reaction is to beat him so hard his ancestors feel it, right?

A particularly nice touch is how Steve is utterly unrepentant.

What, exactly, is the message of this story? Seriously.

The only difference between Steve and Doctor Psycho is Psycho was ugly, so he went to jail. Steve was a pretty-boy, so it’s okay when he kidnaps and enslaves a woman.

Yes. That’s right folks. The next issue will make your eyes roll. THIS issue….well, it just made your stomach turn.

Hey, where’s her magic girdle? You know, the thing that allows her to retain her Amazonian strength in Man’s World. Don’t tell me Steve hocked it down at the pawn shop in order to pay for the nuptials?

And he has to be “patient”? She’s immortal! How much longer does Colonel Dickery have to sit around and wait?

Obviously Steve and Diana are just playing their typical power games with one another.

Next week, it’s Wonder Woman’s turn to be the “Master”! “I command you to PUT THIS LEATHER MASK ON OVER YOUR HEAD, STEVE!”

Yeah it’s kinda goofy, but honestly? Either she’s into it, in which case, what’s the problem? (And remember that this was WW’s bread and butter at it’s inception) Or she’s not and you get VERY worried about what the writers were thinking.

Maybe my sense of humour’s on the blink… :-/

Gaz… first of all, this is from issue 167 Gaz, long after the bondage themes had mostly faded to the background.

Secondly, if you don’t see a creepy subtext here then well, I don’t know what to tell you.

I think maybe my last part of the comment is right. I have some trouble with my sense of humour where this stuff is concerned, as I see a fair amount of grey.

I’ve probably said too much by posting even that much, but its done now…

“This is the proper use of the lasso” is a phrase you just don’t hear often enough outside of a rodeo or sex club.
