The Night Before Batmas

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the Asylum;
Not a felon was stirring – Well, except Tweedledum.
The straightjackets were tightened up on the felons with care;
With hope that in the morning, they’d all still be there.

The guards all wished they were home in their beds;
And took bets on which monster would remove their heads.
Dr. Arlham in his office, was reading a tome
When suddenly there was a crashing KABOOM!

From the prison yard it came, this loud booming noise,
That threatened to awaken the twisted girls and boys.
Away from the windows guards flew like The Flash.
Fearing they’d soon have a smile-shaped gash

On the moon shone a light, yet a shadow as well.
The image of a bat, from straight out of hell.
And there in the yard, what should appear?
But the one grim avenger those monsters all feared.

With his dark volumus cape and pointed cowl,
He stood and stared at the villains all foul.
Then behind him from shadows more heroes arose.
All with grim expressions and dramatic pose.

“Come Robin, now Nightwing. Now Spoiler and Halo!
On Knight and on Squire, Red Hood and El Gaucho!
Take up a perimeter, keep eyes on the wall
Remain here at guard, lest Gotham fall”

Then they dropped back into the shadows, like ninjas of old.
Leaving only one hero, there out in the cold.
So up to the building, he dramatically stalked.
His footsteps like a ninja as he soundlessly walked.

And then! With a jingle a batline stuck the roof
Then swung away that knight, both dark and aloof.
Seconds later in the main cellblock, he suddenly appeared.
Surrounded by villains – some insane, some just weird.

They were dressed all in orange, in rooms made of foam.
Their criminal acts had made Arkham their home.
They were paying the price for the crimes they’d committed.
For in the court of the Batman, few are acquainted.

His eyes –how they gleamed – lit with fire within
His jaw set with confidence that justice would win.
His grim mouth didn’t smile, not since he was eight.
The day of a movie, some pearls and his fate.

The gleam of a batarang was seen in his fist.
As Zzazz and Croc in their cells booed and hissed.
The Batman ignored them and just turned away.
He had a more important mission that day.

He was brave and bold, a caped crusader indeed.
But today he was thinking of a different need.
He went to the fireplace in the break room and stood.
Then tapped and knocked at a joist made of wood.

The wall slid open, the secret mission revealed
Behind that wall was the Joker, now unconcealed.
The Batman was silent, he simply let loose with his fist
The clown prince of crime simply could not resist.

As he was led to his cell, that murderous clown,
He looked out a window at the skyline of town
And then he cackled, in evil delight
“Merry Batmas to you, and to all a good-night!”
