I apologize for the lack of WWTT post this Friday – I’m in transit and without my files.
I spent the Sabbath in Worchester, MA at the local Chabbad. My father is speaking there Saturday night and I came along. The Rabbi of the Chabbad Synagogue is 90 years old, and one of the first American Shlichim (outreach emissary).
On the way home from synagogue he was telling us about growing up and his childhood friend, Yaakov Weinberg, late Rosh HaYeshiva (headmaster) of Ner Israel (my eldest brother’s alma mater). It seems Rabbi Fogelman and Rav Yakov were childhood chums.
“I would get these magazines, Doc Savage and The Shadow, and I would be all excited and tell Yakov how great they are and he would say ‘balony!’.”
My father is having a hard time understanding my glee at imagining these two rabbis as little kids, arguing over which pulp hero was cooler.
