Gail said that Marvel supposedly was the WORST for sexist writing in its comics back in the 60s. It’s like Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Stan Lee could create a whole whack of great characters between them, but they couldn’t write women worth a lick except as flakes and wet blankets.

Having read through the entire Hulk run and now several decades worth of The Avengers, I can see that.

I have one other Wasp example from the 60’s that’s pretty aweful. I’ve also come across a few that are pretty bad in the 80s. Forgot to clip them though.

    How bad?

Someone is manipulating the weather. Jan asks if she can go to Antarctica so she can…try out her new fur coat!

    Really.

And I have some wonderful DC examples too.

Actually, I don’t think Marvel was worse than DC in the Silver Age. I mean, seriously, Lois Lane’s whole life resolved around getting superman to like her. Every girl that meets hero x y z imeaditely falls in love with him because he’s so handsome and noble and whatnot. Heck, they’ll even marry a villain if he’s a little bit nice to them (still talking about DC). Yuck.
I think it’s safe to say that DC and Marvel were equally bad in their potrayal of women.
As for the wasp … well, I guess this shallow portrayal was supposed to be her personality. And let’s get serious, there ARE many shallow girls (I should know… I’m female) Still doesn’t make it any less bad.
