Hop Harrigan is a fun little home-spun adventure strip, featuring a young boy who basically runs away from his legal guardian to hang out on an airstrip with two guys.
Okay, to be fair, the legal guardian was an abusive jackass, and the two guys were swell.
In an early story, Hop rescues a young kidnap victim named “Jerry” who – in a big twist – is actually “Gerry,” as in Geraldine. Her parents send her to Hop for flight lessons (which makes sense, as he’s just started flying himself). Of course, Gerry falls for Hop, which is a nice shift from the usual Golden Age ‘romances’ – he’s young, attractive, cool, and attainable. He is, however, a little clueless.
When Gerry almost crashes a plane, Hop has to snap her out of it…. forcefully. Gerry then, very sensibly, tells her parents.
Okay, maybe not sensibly.
Gotta love the mom.
“That’s nice dear. Your father put broken glass in my drink today. Isn’t love grand?”
